Cabinet Hardware : The Ins & Outs

A House of Huck bathroom

A good rule of thumb for selecting cabinet pull and handle sizes is to match the hardware scale to the size of the cabinet or drawer for both aesthetics and functionality. Here are a few guidelines to help :

  1. Drawers 12 inches or less – Use pulls around 3-4 inches in length, or a small knob.

  2. Drawers 12 to 30 inches – A pull that is about one-third of the drawer's width (usually 4-7 inches) works well here, depending on the look you want. For a more substantial look, you can also consider two smaller pulls spaced evenly.

  3. Drawers 30 inches or more – Opt for longer pulls, around 8-12 inches, or use two pulls for balance.

4. Tall Cabinets and Doors – Use pulls that are roughly one-third the height of the door, usually in the 8-12 inch range, to keep a balanced look without overwhelming the cabinet.

5. Knobs as an Alternative – If you're using knobs, they can typically stay the same size across all cabinets and drawers, regardless of their dimensions.

6. Consistency Across the Space – For a cohesive look, try to stick with the same size pulls for all similar-size cabinets or drawers within a space, even if the exact measurements differ slightly.

These general rules can be adjusted based on the style you're aiming for, but following these sizing principles can help achieve a balanced, functional, and visually appealing look. And remember, if you love it … go for it!
